Probability Density Function

February 26, 2009 · 2 Comments

Discrete Random Variable, their expectation, variance and standard deviation were explained earlier in Random Variables note. In general, three kinds of probability distributions – binomial, normal and Poisson (also known as rare event distribution) – govern events that are described by such random variables.

Continuous random variables are different. They can take an infinite number of values within a given interval. We cannot list out all these values simply because we cannot mark two neighboring values for a continuous variable. The curious thing is the probability of a continuous random variable taking a concrete single value could be zero. Of course, we need to overcome this situation. Let us see how.

A Lonely Word

Ideally it is expected that one must be truthful and honest in a relationship.

For the relationship to flourish, one should share with the other all of what one is. One should not hide anything, be it feelings and emotions, nascent thoughts and profound insights, little joys and life’s trinkets, bitter fights and fancy flights, cribs and cackles and sweet nothings.

Crow Shooter Joe

February 21, 2009 · Leave a Comment

As a tribe, we have maintained such exalted standards in the past, to give credit where it is due:

During those decades Adayar was a much more wooded area than it is today with plenty of crows who found an excellent source of food in the food packs of the cast and crew of the film. During those days all involved in a movie irrespective of status ate the same food and with shooting being done courtesy Sun God if a cloud appeared covering the Sun that was the time to break for food, no matter what the clock hands said!

The artistes would rush as soon as the clouds moved away leaving the food packets and the crows would fly down to have a hearty meal. The happy incessant cawing of the crows interfered with the recording of dialogue and song (during that time artistes had to sing songs on location like speaking dialogue).

The exasperated director brought on board an Anglo Indian to shoot an air rifle into the sky to scare away the crows before he started shooting.

That was not all. There was a credit card in the titles, ‘Crow Shooter – Joe’.

Perhaps the only one of its kind in movie history!

From Randor Guy’s latest blast from the past, review of Pavalakodi (1934). Here is a podcast of his recent talk.

Random Variable

Suppose we have a collection of y articles (say y = 100) out of which say, x articles are bad ones. Like out of the first 100 notes and essays (y) at this website, 99 are duds. The remaining one is the default Hello World post. In the next 100, the number of duds decrease to say 98, with the additional good one written by a guest writer, and so on.
